Whois Lookup
Look up domain registration details, including registrar, key dates, and nameservers.
What Whois data contains
Whois is a public directory of domain registration information. A lookup returns the registrar responsible for the domain, important dates such as registration, expiration, and last update, and the nameservers that route DNS queries. Some registries also include registrant details, although privacy protection services now mask this information for many domains.
Reading the results
The registrar field identifies the company through which the domain was registered. Expiration dates are critical: a domain that lapses can be lost or taken over, so monitoring this date prevents accidental downtime. The updated date reflects the last change to the registration record. Domain age, derived from the creation date, is sometimes used as a trust signal, although its actual influence on rankings is limited and indirect. Nameservers reveal where DNS is hosted and can indicate whether the domain uses a third-party DNS provider or CDN.
Practical uses
- Domain due diligence. Check the registration history and current status of a domain before acquiring or partnering.
- Brand protection. Identify the registrar of a domain that infringes on your brand so you can pursue the correct abuse channel.
- Migration planning. Confirm nameservers and registrar details before moving DNS or transferring ownership.
- Renewal management. Verify expiration dates for domains in your portfolio.
Limitations and privacy
Whois data is not always complete or accurate. Many registrars redact personal information for privacy, and some registries restrict access to certain fields. The information reflects the registry's current record and may lag behind recent changes. This tool performs a single domain lookup and does not monitor changes or send alerts. It cannot confirm who actually operates a website, because ownership can be separated from registration details.
