What the OpenGraph checker does
This tool reads a webpage's OpenGraph metadata and shows an approximate preview of how the page could appear when shared on social media. It displays the title, description, and image that platforms may use in a link preview.
OpenGraph is a set of meta tags that describe a page for social platforms. Tags such as og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url let a page control how it is represented when linked in a post or message. Without them, platforms guess based on page content, often with inconsistent results.
Why OpenGraph metadata matters
Shared links are a major source of traffic for many sites. A link preview with a clear title, a concise description, and an appropriate image is more likely to attract clicks than a bare URL or an awkward auto-generated preview. Good metadata makes shared content look intentional and trustworthy.
OpenGraph also supports consistency across platforms. Different social networks may have their own conventions, but many read OpenGraph tags as a baseline. Setting them properly reduces the chance of a misleading or broken preview.
How to interpret the preview
Review the title, description, and image shown. Check that the title is readable and specific, the description summarizes the page accurately, and the image is appropriate in content and aspect ratio. A missing image often results in a plain text link, which is less engaging.
Verify the underlying tags as well. The og:url should match the canonical URL, and the image URL should be absolute and publicly accessible. Platforms cache previews, so changes may not appear immediately; some offer debugging tools to refresh the cache.
Common OpenGraph issues
- Missing tags. No OpenGraph metadata, leaving platforms to guess.
- Wrong image size. Images that are too small or poorly proportioned.
- Relative image URLs. Image paths that platforms cannot resolve.
- Mismatched URL.
og:urlpointing to a different page than the canonical. - Stale cached previews. Old metadata still shown after updates.
Practical workflow
Check the preview for key shareable pages: articles, product pages, and the homepage. Confirm that title, description, and image are present and accurate. Test the link in an actual social post or platform debugger to see the rendered preview, and refresh caches after changes.
Limitations
The preview is an approximation based on OpenGraph tags in the HTML response. Actual previews vary by platform, and some platforms may use their own tags or override OpenGraph values.
