Why noindex matters

A noindex directive tells search engines not to include a page in their index. It is a deliberate tool for keeping certain pages out of search results, such as staging environments, internal search pages, or content that should not be publicly discoverable. When noindex is applied unintentionally, it can prevent important pages from appearing in search, which directly affects visibility and traffic.

Where noindex can appear

This checker examines three common sources of noindex signals:

  • Meta robots HTML tag. A tag in the page head such as <meta name="robots" content="noindex">.
  • X-Robots-Tag HTTP header. A response header that applies noindex to non-HTML resources or as an alternative to meta tags.
  • Robots.txt file. A robots.txt disallow rule can prevent crawling, which may indirectly keep a page out of the index even though it is not a noindex directive itself.

Interpreting the result

The tool reports the presence or absence of each signal and combines them into a final indexability verdict. If any source indicates noindex, the page is likely to be excluded from search results. A robots.txt block can prevent crawling but does not always remove a page from the index if it is linked elsewhere. The final result summarizes what the tool observed; search engines make the ultimate decision based on all available signals.

Limitations

This checker inspects the HTTP response and HTML for a single URL. It does not confirm how a specific search engine has actually treated the page, and it cannot detect directives added by JavaScript after the initial response. Robots.txt rules apply to crawlers broadly and may be interpreted differently depending on the crawler. Use the result to verify configuration and combine it with search engine tools when you need confirmation of indexing status.
