Domain Rating
Domain Rating: Understanding the Backlink Strength Metric
Domain Rating, or DR, is a metric created by Ahrefs to express the strength of a website's backlink profile on a scale from 0 to 100. This tool looks up the DR for a given domain.
What Domain Rating Measures
DR is based on the quantity and quality of links pointing to a site, weighted by the authority of the linking domains. A link from a highly rated site contributes more than a link from a low-rated one. The score is relative: it reflects how a site compares to others in the Ahrefs index, not an absolute measure of quality.
How to Read the Score
- Low DR (0–20): few or low-authority inbound links. Common for new or small sites.
- Moderate DR (20–50): a growing link profile with some established referring domains.
- High DR (50–80): a strong profile with many authoritative links.
- Very high DR (80–100): typically large, well-known sites with extensive link profiles.
What DR Does Not Tell You
- Traffic: DR is a link metric, not an estimate of visitors.
- Content quality: a high DR does not guarantee useful or accurate content.
- Rankings: DR correlates with ranking potential but does not determine it. Search engines use many signals.
- Relevance: links from unrelated sites can inflate a profile without helping topical authority.
Practical Uses
- Comparing the relative link strength of competing sites.
- Evaluating a potential link partner or guest post target.
- Tracking your own link-building progress over time.
- Prioritizing outreach based on authority.
Limitations
DR is proprietary to Ahrefs and is calculated from their crawl data. It changes as their index updates and can differ from metrics by other providers. Treat it as one indicator among many, not as a definitive ranking factor.
Summary
Domain Rating summarizes the strength of a site's backlink profile on a 0–100 scale. This tool retrieves the DR for a domain, helping you compare link authority for research, outreach, or tracking.
